UN Chief Calls for Global Action as Sudanese War Marks Two Years

(MENAFN) On Monday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres observed the two-year milestone of the ongoing turmoil in Sudan by drawing attention to its devastating consequences on the population and appealing for international intervention to halt the violence.

Guterres issued a statement highlighting the immense suffering endured by non-combatants.

He denounced the "indiscriminate attacks on markets, hospitals, schools and displacement sites," stressing that Sudan remains in a catastrophic state, with civilians bearing the brunt of the destruction.

According to Guterres, "Almost 12 million people have fled their homes," resulting in the largest displacement crisis on the planet. Over 3.8 million of those individuals have sought sanctuary in bordering nations, deepening the regional impact of the conflict.

The Secretary-General pointed out that upwards of 30 million individuals are in urgent need of humanitarian support, including 25 million grappling with severe food insecurity.

He cautioned that, with the approach of the lean season, "famine has been identified in at least five locations and is projected to spread further."

Guterres also condemned the ongoing violence against humanitarian personnel, stating that "aid workers have been targeted: at least 90 have lost their lives since the fighting began."

He stressed the importance of accountability and insisted on "independent, impartial and transparent investigations into all reports of violations and abuses."

Raising alarms about the continuous influx of arms into the region, he urged that "The external support and flow of weapons must end."

Emphasizing the need for political resolve, Guterres reiterated that "the only way to ensure the protection of civilians is to end this senseless conflict."
