Far-Left Group Takes Responsibility for Hellenic Train Bombing in Greece

(MENAFN) A newly emerged far-left organization has claimed responsibility for Friday’s bombing outside the offices of Greece’s railway operator, Hellenic Train, as well as a similar attack in February.

Friday’s explosion caused minor damage and no injuries. According to reports, the group alerted local media outlets ahead of the detonation. A similar warning was issued prior to the February blast outside the Labor Ministry, which also resulted in no casualties.

In an extended statement published on the Athens Indymedia website, the group identified itself as Revolutionary Class Self-Defense.

It described last week’s general strike and mass protests marking the anniversary of the fatal train collision on February 28, 2023, as “collective defense as a class” and “a practical act of solidarity with the heroic Palestinian people, who with weapons in hand show the way for the liberation of the peoples of the whole world.”
Revolutionary Class Self-Defense attributed blame for the 2023 crash — which left 57 dead after a passenger and freight train collided on the same track — to Hellenic Train.

“With the blood not yet dry, they attributed the (train) accident to human error and the ‘chronic deficiencies of the Greek state,’ in effect demanding even more freedom of movement for capital, more privatizations and new attacks on any remaining state-owned infrastructure,” the group stated.

Criticism was directed at the economic policies implemented by governments, which were said to have deteriorated working conditions and “murdered” workers due to workplace accidents.

As of this report’s filing, the government has not issued a response.
