EU foreign ministers unite to address Ukraine, Gaza conflicts
(MENAFN) European foreign ministers reunited in Luxembourg on Monday to tackle urgent global challenges, with the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza at the forefront of discussions. The ministers advocated for ceasefires in both areas and stressed the necessity of increasing pressure on Russia to conclude its military actions in Ukraine.
The European Union indicated that the Foreign Affairs Council meeting would address a wide range of topics, including the war in Ukraine, the Middle Eastern crisis involving Syria, EU-Africa relations, developments in the Western Balkans, and the dynamics between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
“I think we have to put the maximum pressure on Russia to really end this war, because it takes two to want peace. It only takes one to want war,” remarked EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas during her press statements upon arrival.
French Foreign Minister Jean Noel-Barrot supported this view, claiming that Russia has “no intention” of agreeing to a ceasefire. He called for the EU to implement more stringent measures against Moscow, stating “I call on the European Union to impose the harshest possible sanctions against Russia to suffocate its economy and prevent it from fueling its war effort,” Barrot also mentioned that the United States could play a significant role in pressuring Russia to enter negotiations.
Regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip, Barrot highlighted the critical need for “unimpeded” humanitarian aid access, labeling the circumstances as “more dire than ever.”
Finland's Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen emphasized the necessity of intensifying sanctions, stating, "We need to step up on the sanctions, and that's what we are working on the 17th package." She highlighted that Russia demonstrates a "full disregard" for the peace process
