EU Commissioner: US Admin. Playing Against Global Car Market Flow

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, March 27 (KUNA) -- European Commissioner for the Clean, Just, and Competitive Transition, Teresa Ribera, said on Thursday that the US administration "is playing against the well-functioning of the global car market" in response to US President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 25 percent tariff on imported cars and auto parts.
In a statement to the press before the start of the EU's Environment Council meeting in Brussels, Ribera said, "For the US tariffs, this is very bad news. We really regret that the American administration is playing against the well-functioning of the global car market and not allowing that we can compete in a level playing field context and allow innovation. I think this is bad for consumers and bad for industrialists."
The European Commissioner explained that EU member states should pay attention to their own interests. She added, "We will work together to ensure that this (decision) will be manageable by our own companies."
Ribera confirmed that the European Union would respond to the US tariffs on European car imports, noting that the Commission "is waiting to see what they are framing in exact terms and be sure we will respond accordingly." (end)
