Governor announces two deceased in Ukrainian drone assaults on Russian border area
(MENAFN) Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia’s Belgorod Region claimed two lives and injured several others, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported on Telegram on Friday. According to his statement, around a dozen settlements were targeted throughout the day.
One attack killed a civilian and left another severely wounded in a village located about 18km from the Ukrainian border. Two additional strikes injured one civilian each in other settlements. Later in the evening, a Ukrainian UAV hit a vehicle, killing a security company employee and injuring four of his colleagues, who were hospitalized.
Several other drone strikes caused property damage, affecting civilian infrastructure, private homes, commercial buildings, and vehicles, according to local authorities.
Belgorod Region has faced frequent attacks from Ukraine throughout the conflict. In May 2024, Russia launched an offensive into Ukraine’s Kharkov Region, aiming to disrupt Kiev’s ability to target Belgorod with short-range weapons. Despite this, Ukrainian forces have continued cross-border drone strikes.
Earlier this week, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukraine attempted a larger cross-border assault on Belgorod Region, deploying 200 soldiers and 29 military vehicles, including five tanks. The Russian military repelled the attack, reportedly eliminating up to 60 Ukrainian troops and destroying at least one tank.
The latest strikes come as negotiations continue for a US-backed partial ceasefire aimed at halting long-range strikes on energy infrastructure. The proposed agreement, advocated by US President Donald Trump, seeks to pave the way for broader peace talks and a potential truce.
