Istanbul Municipal Council Elects Replacement To Jailed Mayor


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ISTANBUL, March 26 (KUNA) -- The Municipal Council of Istanbul elected Nuri Aslan as interim mayor of the city, replacing Ekrem Imamoglu who has been prosecuted on corruption charges since his arrest on March 19.
The council, controlled by the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), voted for Aslan by 177 out of the 314 votes, on Wednesday.
Aslan will act as interim mayor until the end of Imamoglu's five-year term in office.
Three days after Imamoglu's arrest, the CHP selected him on March 23 as the party's candidate for the next presidential election amid mass demonstrations.
On Sunday, March 23, a court ordered Imamoglu and 20 other accomplices be kept in custody pending their trial on corruption and terror charges. (end)
