Judge Halts Detention of Columbia University Student

(MENAFN) A federal judge in New York has temporarily halted the detention of Yunseo Chung, a 21-year-old Columbia University student, as she challenges her deportation.

Chung, a permanent US resident, has been targeted by immigration authorities because she engaged in pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus.

In response, her legal team filed an emergency motion on Monday, arguing that the government's actions infringe upon her constitutional rights, specifically her right to free speech.

The lawsuit claims, "The government’s actions are an unprecedented and unjustifiable assault on First Amendment and other rights, one that cannot stand basic legal scrutiny."

US District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald issued a temporary restraining order on Tuesday, preventing the government from detaining Chung during the ongoing immigration case, as outlined in the court order reported by a news agency.

Chung's legal team, which includes groups like CLEAR (Creating Law Enforcement Accountability & Responsibility), Human Rights First, as well as the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, contends that she is being targeted unfairly due to her political views, especially her advocacy for Palestinian rights.
