Mangrove Planting On Qetaifan Island North

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has announced its collaboration with Qetaifan Projects to implement an innovative environmental project that involves planting 1,000 seedlings of native mangrove trees on Qetaifan Island North in Lusail City.
Considered a first-of-its-kind in Qatar, the project incorporates mangrove trees as a key element in landscape design, adding a unique environmental and aesthetic dimension.
Youssef al-Hamar, director of the Department of Wildlife Plant Development at the Ministry, stressed that the project reflects the ministry's commitment to promoting sustainable environmental practices. It aligns with efforts to achieve the goals of sustainable development and Qatar National Vision 2030.
The official noted that planting native mangrove trees on Qetaifan Island is an environmental milestone in Qatar, as these trees are being utilised for the first time in a functional and aesthetic manner. Besides, this initiative enhances the integration of environmental solutions with sustainable urban planning.
Al-Hamar explained that the project will contribute to improving the quality of the coastal environment through expanding green spaces and enhancing biodiversity.
It will provide natural habitats for marine life and birds while raising community awareness about the importance of innovative environmental solutions. This initiative sets a pioneering model for integrating urban planning with environmental sustainability.
Adel al-Yafei, head of the Wildlife Plant Section at the ministry, pointed out that the mangrove seedlings for the project will be supplied from Al Ghashamiya Centre, inaugurated on Qatar Environment Day. The project will be carried out according to precise environmental standards to maximise its ecological benefits. This initiative is part of a series of environmental projects implemented by the ministry in collaboration with both the public and private sectors.
Al-Yafei explained that the project aims to support the coastal environment, enhance ecological balance, and utilise natural resources for the rehabilitation of coastal areas in innovative ways. In addition, it seeks to raise community awareness about the vital role of mangrove trees as an effective environmental solution.
He noted that mangroves help absorb carbon, improve air quality, protect coastlines from erosion, and provide a habitat for marine organisms and migratory birds.
This project is part of the ongoing collaboration between the Department of Wildlife Plant Development, Qetaifan Projects, and the Earthna Centre for a Sustainable Future.
