Turkey’s UN Ambassador Highlights Need for Adaptability in Peacekeeping

(MENAFN) On Monday, Turkey’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ahmet Yildiz, emphasized the importance of flexibility in UN peacekeeping operations to address the evolving challenges facing the world.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, Yildiz honored the memory of fallen peacekeepers, stating, "Their sacrifice is a solemn reminder of the dangers faced by those who serve under the UN flag."

Yildiz also highlighted Turkey’s long-time participations to peacekeeping, noting that it is now crucial for all countries to ensure that peacekeeping efforts remain relevant and responsive to the changing landscape of global peace and security.

"We cannot afford to continue business as usual, not when the international landscape is undergoing profound transformation, and peacekeeping missions are increasingly deployed in multi-dimensional, high-risk environments," he added.

The ambassador further underscored the significance of political commitment in fulfilling peacekeeping mandates, asserting that "UN peacekeeping operations must be backed by genuine political will for realizing their mandates."

Yildiz concluded by stressing that "the 'primacy of politics' must become a guiding principle of UN peacekeeping" when it comes to solving wars.
