Trump Considers Lower Tariffs for Several Countries
(MENAFN) United States Leader Donald Trump has indicated that he is contemplating the possibility of imposing lower tariff percentages on "a lot of countries" while he plans to unveil what he describes as "reciprocal tariffs" on countries across the globe the upcoming week.
Trump has carried on presenting this forthcoming act as a method to enhance American prosperity, suggesting that foreign nations have unfairly taken advantage of the US’s wealth.
He argued that applying these duties would encourage other countries to reduce their own financial barriers, although he mentioned that the US administration might ultimately impose lower tariffs on some nations than they charge on American exports.
"I may give a lot of countries breaks, but it's reciprocal. But, we might be even nicer than that. You know, we've been very nice to a lot of countries for a long time, but I call it Liberation Day. April 2 is Liberation Day," Trump explained, referencing the set deadline.
"We may take less than what they're charging because they've charged us so much, I don't think they could take it. In other words, they've charged us so much that I'm embarrassed to charge them what they've charged us, but it'll be substantial, and you'll be hearing about that on April 2," he further noted.
The announcement of Trump’s reciprocal tariffs plan has caused global markets to decline sharply, with growing concerns that it could push the US economy toward a recession.
On Friday, he mentioned that "there will be flexibility" in his reciprocal tariffs approach after previously appearing unwilling to offer exemptions, which gave markets a much-needed sense of relief.
