(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
TOKYO, March 24 (KUNA) - Japan, on Monday, established the Joint Operations Command for the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) that directs the operations of the Ground, Maritime, and Air forces in an integrated manner.
The new command, led by Lieut. General Kenichiro Nagumo, was launched at the Defense Ministry with a staff of about 240 personnel. This is the first major organizational restructuring of the SDF in about 19 years.
The ministry said the establishment of the new joint command would facilitate rapid unit operations and strengthen cooperation with the US military.
Under the orders of the defense minister, the head of the Joint Operations Command takes full control of the all three SDFs branches, as well as coordinating operations with the US military, according to the ministry.
The new commander also centralizes command of space, cyber and electromagnetic forces.
Meanwhile, Chief of the Joint Staff, who has been in charge of the military, will be concentrating on assisting the defense minister.
At a press conference, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said, "This will enable us to more rapidly establish a flexible defense system that responds to the situation. We will also be able to centralize information sharing and operational cooperation with the headquarters of allied and like-minded countries."
"In the most severe and complex security environment since the World War II, we will drastically strengthen our defense capabilities by steadily advancing the initiatives incorporated in the National Security Strategy and further strengthen the deterrence and response capabilities of the Japan-US alliance," Hayashi stressed.
