Canada’s foreign minister responds to US trade conflict with confidence
(MENAFN) Canada’s Foreign Minister, Melanie Joly, expressed strong confidence that Canada will rule in its current trade conflict with the United States, which was sparked by a series of tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump.
In an interview aired this past Saturday, Joly highlighted Canada's crucial role as a top trading partner for the US, saying, "We are the biggest customer of the US. We buy more from the Americans than China, Japan, the UK and France combined."
The US administration has imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum imports. Additionally, Trump unveiled intensions to implement a set of "reciprocal" tariffs, set to take effect on April 2.
Joly acknowledged that the tariffs and their resulting costs are a significant concern for Canadians, especially with a federal election approaching. However, she emphasized Canada's substantial economic leverage, stating, "We have the most leverage in the world when it comes to the US."
Furthermore, Joly noted that the tariff impact is not limited to Canada, warning that "hardworking Americans" would also feel the consequences.
