Australia's Abrams Tank Deployment to Ukraine Faces Obstacles

(MENAFN) Australia’s decision to send its US-made Abrams tanks to Ukraine has encountered several obstacles, particularly after Washington decided to suspend military aid to the country.

The Australian Department of Defense stated that the tanks’ transfer to Ukraine continues to be “complex,” as reported by an Australian news agency. Premier Anthony Albanese acknowledged that transporting the tanks to Ukraine remains "a difficult task."

The previous year, Australia revealed plans to provide Ukraine with 49 of its aging M1A1 Abrams tanks from its fleet, as part of a broader USD245 million military assistance package designed to bolster Ukraine’s defense against Russia.

A news agency reported that the Ministry of Defense mentioned it is “collaborating closely with partners, including the US, to facilitate the prompt delivery of the M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine.”

The logistical operations, particularly at the hub in Rzeszow, Poland, approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the Poland-Ukraine border, have become contentious due to the US halting its aid.

Based on the media outlet, this freeze has affected the efficiency of the tank transfer.

Additionally, last week, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski indicated that the supply of American weaponry to Ukraine via Poland had reverted to previous levels at the US military base near Rzeszow.
