Trump claims Tesla attackers possibly to be up against El Salvador mega prison

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has proposed that individuals convicted of recent attacks on Tesla facilities could serve their sentences in El Salvador’s mega-prison.

Tesla dealerships, vehicles, and charging stations in the US and Canada have been repeatedly targeted in recent months. The attacks, labeled “domestic terrorism” by US Attorney General Pam Bondi, have included Molotov cocktail firebombings, gunfire, and vandalism with anti-Musk graffiti.

Trump, posting on Truth Social, called for harsh penalties against the perpetrators, stating:

“I look forward to watching the sick terrorist thugs get 20-year jail sentences for what they are doing to Elon Musk and Tesla. Perhaps they could serve them in the prisons of El Salvador, which have become so recently famous for such lovely conditions!”

Trump’s comments follow a recent offer from Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, who suggested that Washington could send its convicts—including US citizens—to serve time in El Salvador’s prison system.

The Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), a controversial mega-prison, was built to house gang members under El Salvador’s 2022 national emergency crackdown on organized crime. While the facility has been credited with reducing gang violence, it has been widely criticized for overcrowding and inhumane conditions.

So far, three individuals have been charged for firebombing Tesla EVs and charging stations, according to a US Department of Justice statement. If convicted, they face up to 20 years in prison.

The attacks are believed to be partly fueled by backlash against Musk, who serves as Trump’s government efficiency czar and is leading federal budget cuts and workforce reductions.
