Trump announces Boeing awarded contract to build F-47
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has announced that Boeing has been awarded the contract to build the F-47, the Air Force’s next-generation sixth-generation fighter jet. Speaking from the Oval Office on Friday, Trump described the aircraft as “the most lethal ever built.”
The F-47, named after Trump’s presidency as the 47th US president, is part of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program. The Air Force had previously confirmed that a prototype had been tested during Trump’s first term.
“At my direction, the US Air Force is moving forward with the world’s first sixth-generation fighter jet. Nothing in the world comes even close to it,” Trump stated.
A key feature of the jet is its ability to fly alongside multiple drones, giving it a unique tactical advantage:
“It flies with many, many drones— as many as you want. This is a technology that no other plane can match,” Trump explained.
Trump revealed that Boeing had won the contract over Lockheed Martin after a “rigorous and thorough competition” between top US aerospace firms. Following the announcement, Boeing’s stock surged 5%, while Lockheed’s fell by nearly 7%.
The F-47 is set to replace the F-22 Raptor, which was developed by Lockheed Martin. Despite its advanced technology, Lockheed has faced criticism for delays in upgrading the F-35 program.
“We have given an order for a lot [of F-47s]. We cannot tell you the price,” Trump said, without revealing the total cost.
Boeing has faced multiple setbacks in recent years, including safety concerns, cost overruns, and a prolonged worker strike over wages. Despite these issues, the company has now secured major defense contracts, including the US Navy’s next-generation carrier-based stealth fighter.
Trump himself criticized Boeing last month over delays in completing the new Air Force One:
“We are getting a new Air Force One, if Boeing could ever finish the damn thing,” he remarked.
