Trump declares he’s serious regarding Canada

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has reiterated that he is serious about the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States. His remarks come as tensions escalate between the two nations over a growing trade dispute.

Speaking from the Oval Office on Friday, Trump repeated his long-standing claim that the US is financially propping up Canada, citing what he calls a massive trade imbalance between the two countries.

“It costs us $200 billion a year in subsidies to keep Canada afloat,” he stated, adding that the US does not need Canadian exports such as cars, lumber, and energy.

“When I say they should be a state, I mean that. I really mean that.”

Newly sworn-in Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who replaced Justin Trudeau last week, dismissed Trump’s remarks, stating that Canada will never become part of the US.

“We will never, ever, in any way, shape, or form, be part of the United States,” Carney declared.

He emphasized both Canada’s national identity and economic independence, calling Trump’s suggestion unrealistic.

The remarks come amid an intensifying trade war between the two countries.

•Canada recently imposed 25% tariffs on $30 billion worth of US imports, retaliating against a similar US tariff hike.

•Trump had initially planned to raise tariffs to 50%, but scaled back after Canada reconsidered a 25% tariff increase on American energy imports.

Despite the rising tensions, Ottawa has signaled a willingness to negotiate, with Carney stating that Canada is open to discussions, but only if treated with respect as a sovereign nation.
