Ex-UFC champion declares his intention to run for Irish president in 2025 election
(MENAFN) Former UFC champion Conor McGregor has once again declared his intention to run for Irish president in the 2025 election, pledging to challenge the EU Migration Pact if elected.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, McGregor emphasized his opposition to the migration policy adopted by the European Parliament last year.
“The next presidential election must take place by November 11, 2025. Who else will stand up to the Government and oppose this bill? I will!” he wrote.
He also promised to hold a referendum on the matter, stating that immigration policy should be decided by the people of Ireland, not the government.
McGregor’s announcement comes shortly after his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House. Following their discussion, he accused the Irish government of politically sidelining its citizens.
Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin later criticized McGregor’s stance on X, arguing that his views do not reflect those of the Irish public.
McGregor has become a prominent voice for Ireland’s right-wing opposition, particularly after a 2023 stabbing incident in Dublin involving an Algerian-born man. He publicly criticized Ireland’s immigration policies, which led to accusations from the government that he incited riots following the attack.
Despite having a loyal fan base, McGregor remains a polarizing figure. His reputation was further damaged after an Irish civil court found him guilty of raping a woman in 2018. The former fighter has appealed the ruling, maintaining that the encounter was consensual and requesting to present new evidence.
