IATA Urges Rapid Adoption Of Digital Identity Technologies

Dhaka: The International Air Transport Association (IATA), along with aviation security leaders, has called for the rapid adoption of digital identity technologies with a release on March 20. The trade association believes the move will enhance aviation security and operational efficiency.

Key government and industry leaders in aviation, while attending the Sydney Leaders Week Conference, advocated IATA's position and underscored the significance of collaborations in implementing verifiable credentials (VC) and decentralized identifiers (DIDs).

IATA highlighted stronger document integrity, global trust, and operational efficiency as the key benefits of implementing digital identity technologies.

Nick Careen, IATA's Senior Vice President for Operations, Safety, and Security, described Verifiable Credentials (VC) and Decentralized Identifiers (DID) standards as ready and proven technology and has aimed to obtain a recommendation at the upcoming ICAO assembly later this year.

Government representatives and industry experts from Australia, Canada, China, New Zealand, the UK, and the US who attended the conference have regarded fast-track technology integration, aviation digital ID use case prioritization, investment in capacity building, and increasing stakeholder engagement as the key actions of governments for the industry's digital transformation.

IATA further emphasized its efforts for One ID, an initiative that simplifies the passenger verification process utilizing interoperable digital identity standards and biometric recognition.
