Canada’s PM predicts U.S. will eventually engage in trade talks
(MENAFN) Canadian Premier Mark Carney expressed confidence on Friday that U.S. President Donald Trump would eventually engage in trade talks, noting that American consumers would be the ones to suffer most from the escalating trade conflict.
In a meeting aimed to discuss the trade conflict with Canada’s regional officials at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, Carney stated, "In the end, Americans are going to lose from American trade action," as reported by a news agency on Saturday.
Newly sworn-in Canadian Prime Minister Carney has yet to engage in direct communication with U.S. President Trump, despite the latter's repeated criticisms of Canada. Trump has publicly asserted that the U.S. 'keeps Canada afloat' and has suggested the possibility of Canada becoming 'the 51st state.'
In response to President Trump's comments Carney downplayed them, noting that trade negotiations would not occur "until we get the respect we deserve as a sovereign nation. By the way, this is not a high bar."
