Attack on Civilians in Niger Causes 44 Deaths
(MENAFN) At least 44 people were killed along with 13 others wounded in a “deliberate strike against civilians” on Friday in southwestern Niger, based on Interior Minister Mohamed Toumba, who made the announcement on state television.
The assault took place in the village of Fonbita, located in the rural commune of Kokorou, when militants, believed to be members of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), raided a mosque and targeted worshippers.
Toumba reported that four of the 13 injured are in critical status. The ministry condemned the attack as a "cowardly and inhumane act" and pledged to ramp up efforts to fight terrorism in the country.
In response to the tragedy, the Nigerien government declared a 72-hour period of national mourning, beginning Saturday. Flags will be flown at half-mast across the region, and public gatherings are expected to be subdued as the nation mourns.
