Researchers Extract Ancient Ice Cores from Antarctica

(MENAFN) As part of the Beyond EPICA - Oldest Ice project, research specialists have successfully extracted deep ice cores from Antarctica in an effort to explore Earth's climate history stretching over 1.2 million years.

The project, which is funded by the European Commission and coordinated by the Institute of Polar Sciences of the National Research Council of Italy (Cnr-Isp), holds significant promise for advancing our understanding of climate science.

The ice cores, taken from a depth of 2,800 meters (9,186 feet), are being transported to Europe aboard the research vessel Laura Bassi.

To preserve their integrity, the cores are stored in containers at a chilling -50°C (-58°F). Upon arrival in Italy, they will be sent to Germany, where scientists will carefully cut them into parts for more detailed study process, and for distribution across various laboratories.
