U.S. envoy reports Ukraine's NATO membership is unlikely

(MENAFN) Steven Witkoff, U.S. President Donald Trump's former envoy to the Middle East, revealed on Friday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has largely accepted that Ukraine will not be able to join NATO.

In an interview with U.S. journalist Tucker Carlson, Witkoff stated that both Zelensky and Andriy Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian president's office, have "largely conceded that they are not going to be a member of NATO."

Witkoff explained that Ukraine's leadership has come to terms with the fact that NATO membership would not be part of any peace deal. "If there's going to be a peace deal, Ukraine cannot be a member of NATO. I think that's largely accepted," he noted.

Additionally, Witkoff asserted that the Ukrainian government has agreed to hold elections in the future. While specific details were not provided.

In response to Carlson's question, "Do you think there will be elections in Ukraine?", Witkoff affirmed, "Yes, there will be. They've agreed to it. There will be elections in Ukraine."

The 2024 presidential election has been delayed amid ongoing martial law, implemented due to the conflict with Russia. This delay follows recent criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who called Ukrainian President Zelensky a "Dictator without Elections" last month.
