Dubai: Meet 91-Year-Old War Survivor Who Found A 'Second Home' At Elder Square
At the age of 91, Norma Malouf's life took a dramatic turn when she had to be evacuated from Sudan due to the conflict that erupted in 2023. Reaching out to the French consulate for help after hearing gunshots right behind her home, she thought her life was over. Arriving in Dubai, filled with uncertainty as she left behind her beloved home and her five dogs, Norma found a new meaning to life as she joined Elder Square, an elder daycare centre in Dubai, and discovered a vibrant community.
Seen at the centre's iftar gathering, the French expat was charming a crowd of fellow elder members, their families, and visitors with tales from her rich life of experiences.“I enjoy it here every day; I get to meet people, talk to them, and get to know them,” she told Khaleej Times.
Norma reflected on her journey, saying,“What happened in Sudan was difficult, but I refuse to let it define me. Life goes on, and I've learned to embrace every moment.” She added,“At Elder Square, I've found a new meaning to life. This place has become my second home, where I can share my stories and create new memories with wonderful people.”

Founded by Tamara Binladin, Elder Square, located in Jumeirah, opened its doors in May 2024, focusing on creating a lively community rather than merely providing medical services. From arts and crafts to dancing and karaoke, the center offers activities that cater to seniors' preferences and abilities.
A sense of belongingAmong the attendees at the iftar were fellow members 89-year-old Syed Shahid Husain, who calls himself“the youngest 89,” and 76-year-old Ranendra Narayan Kachari. Both have formed a close bond at Elder Square, which they joined seven months ago.“Before I found this place, I felt really lonely,” shared Ranendra.“Now, I look forward to it every week. It excites me,” he added.
Ranendra's daughter noted the positive change in her father since joining the centre.“He finally has something to look forward to,” she said.“I was really concerned when I brought him here to this new place and environment, but now I see how much happier he is. It's been a wonderful transformation.” Adding to this, Syed said,“I love coming here to play games and beat Ranendra every time! It keeps me young at heart and always brings a smile to my face.”
Tamara Binladin emphasised the importance of a holistic approach, combining wellness with fun at the centre.“Our goal is to ensure every senior feels valued and engaged. We've seen incredible attendance at our events,” she said. She added,“We customise activities based on members' interests, whether it's mobility, calligraphy, or social interaction.”
Elder Square also serves as a community hub, with a café open to all, extending its reach beyond seniors.“We aim to foster connections among all age groups,” Tamara explained. Weekly events, such as sound healing and educational talks, create opportunities for engagement and support.
