Sri Lanka local elections set to be held on May 6

(MENAFN) Sri Lanka's Election Commission has officially declared that local government elections will take place on May 6th. This decision follows the completion of the candidate nomination process, which concluded on March 20th.

The upcoming elections will determine representatives for 336 local government bodies, with over 17 million eligible voters participating.

Originally planned for 2023, the elections were delayed by the Sri Lankan government due to the nation's economic challenges.

Despite previous postponements, the Sri Lankan Supreme Court issued a directive last August requiring the Election Commission to organize and conduct the local government elections with urgency.
