Migrant boat overturn in Italian island leads to fatalities
(MENAFN) A boat conveying migrants trying to reach Europe from Africa overturned near Lampione Island in the Mediterranean Sea, resulting in more than six deaths and approximately 40 people missing, according to local reports on Wednesday.
Italian officials rescued 10 migrants from the sunken vessel near Lampione Island, which is located west of Lampedusa, and recovered the bodies of six individuals, as reported by the Italian news agency.
The Italian Coast Guard and Financial Police intercepted the boat on Tuesday afternoon near Lampione Island, which is situated off the coast of Lampedusa.
Following the incident, 10 survivors, consisting of six men and four women, were rescued, and six bodies were recovered from the sea.
The people rescued, who were taken to Lampedusa, described their distressing journey, stating that they had departed from the Tunisian port city of Sfax in a rubber dinghy late on Sunday night.
Less than a day into their journey, while still in international waters, the boat was struck by turbulent seas, leading to several passengers falling overboard.
