Arab nations denounce failed murder attempt on Somali leader

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, several Arab nations firmly condemned the unsuccessful murder attempt on Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, reiterating their steadfast commitment to Somalia’s safety and stability.

The Somali government confirmed that the explosion in Mogadishu on Tuesday was an assassination attempt orchestrated by al-Shabaab militants.

According to the Information Ministry, Mohamud’s, accompanied by his motorcade, was targeted at approximately 10:32 a.m. local time (0732 GMT) in the Xamar-Jajab district of Mogadishu.

At the time, the president was on his way to Mogadishu International Airport to join forces stationed at the conflict zones in Hirshabelle state.

The al-Qaeda-affiliated group, al-Shabaab, took responsibility for the attack, asserting that it had targeted the president’s motorcade as it made its way toward the airport.

In the wake of the attack, UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed reached out to President Mohamud on Wednesday “to inquire about his wellbeing following the terrorist attack,” as reported by a news agency. The UAE leader extended his “heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the Somali people, wishing a swift recovery for the injured.”
