Trump envoy announces Ukraine ceasefire ‘within weeks’

(MENAFN) A complete ceasefire in Ukraine could be reached within a few weeks, according to Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy. Speaking to Bloomberg TV, Witkoff suggested that sanctions on Russia imposed by Washington could be eased once an agreement is in place.

He described Tuesday’s phone call between trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin as “epic” and “transformational,” emphasizing that both leaders were aligned and focused on achieving results.

Witkoff confirmed that the two presidents agreed on a halt to attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure by both sides, as well as efforts to establish a Black Sea moratorium on strikes against naval vessels and grain shipments.

While acknowledging the complexities of a broader ceasefire—given the 2,000-kilometer border between the two nations and ongoing tensions in Russia’s Kursk Region—Witkoff expressed confidence that trust-building steps were already underway.

Referring to the Russian Defense Ministry’s claim that it shot down its own drones targeting Ukrainian infrastructure after Putin’s order to stop such attacks, Witkoff said he believed the Russian president was acting in good faith.

He also revealed that technical teams from both sides are set to meet in Saudi Arabia next week, adding that a face-to-face Trump-Putin meeting in the kingdom is likely.

While sanctions relief was not directly discussed during the recent call, Witkoff suggested that once a ceasefire is in place, further negotiations—including on sanctions—would naturally follow.
