Deadly Fire Festival in Iran Kills 21 People
(MENAFN) Around 21 individuals have been reported dead along with 6,419 others wounded during celebrations for Iran’s “Chaharshanbe Suri” fire festival, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
The festivities started in the capital, Tehran, following iftar, the meal marking the end of the daily fast during Ramadan. Participants lit fires, jumped over them, and set off fireworks, sparklers, and even homemade explosives.
In spite of the alerts from the Tehran Police Department about drone surveillance to monitor the use of explosives, numerous fatalities occurred due to such dangerous materials.
Iran’s Emergency Medical Services reported that nationwide casualties included 21 deaths and 6,419 injuries, with 18 individuals in critical status. Tehran, along with East Azerbaijan and West Azerbaijan districts, recorded the highest figure of injuries.
Earlier reports in the morning had indicated 19 deaths as well as 5,568 injuries.
