Kyrgyzstan's Parliament Approves Border Deal with Tajikistan

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, Kyrgyzstan's parliament ratified a border deal with nearby country Tajikistan, solving a long-term disagreement that had caused tensions between the two Central Asian countries in the current years.

The bill, along with two additional bills related to separate agreements signed alongside the border deal, was considered and adopted in three readings, according to a statement from Kyrgyzstan’s Supreme Council.

The statement also mentioned that several parliamentary committees held a shared meeting to agree to the bills.

Turgunbek uluu Nurlanbek, the speaker of parliament, was quoted in a subsequent statement saying: “The settlement of the borders will strengthen the centuries-old friendship between the two peoples and contribute to the cessation of disagreements and conflicts between them.”

He further expressed hope that the ratification of the agreements would also foster the growth of political, economic, cultural, as well as humanitarian relations between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
