Kremlin states Putin, Trump trust one another
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald trump share a strong mutual trust, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated following their recent phone conversation on Tuesday.
During the call, which lasted over two hours, the two leaders focused on resolving the Ukraine conflict. Putin reportedly responded positively to Trump’s earlier proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, agreeing to halt attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as an initial step toward de-escalation. They also discussed the broader geopolitical situation, including developments in the Middle East.
Speaking to Russian media on Wednesday, Peskov emphasized that Putin and Trump understand and trust each other, expressing confidence in their commitment to gradually improving U.S.-Russia relations. He also mentioned that further meetings and negotiations are being planned, with specific dates and details to be determined.
Acknowledging the difficulties of repairing relations following the policies of the previous U.S. administration, Peskov stressed that both leaders possess a strong will to move forward, offering hope for diplomatic progress.
One key issue raised during the discussion was Western military aid to Ukraine, which Peskov said remains a critical factor in any potential peace process. However, due to its sensitivity, these discussions will remain behind closed doors for now. Putin also conveyed additional conditions regarding a possible ceasefire to Trump, though details were not disclosed.
The Kremlin confirmed that immediately after the call on March 18, Putin ordered Russian forces to stop targeting Ukraine’s energy facilities and expressed openness to a maritime ceasefire, with further negotiations required to finalize the specifics.
Trump, commenting on the discussion via his Truth Social platform, described the peace process as now being “in full force and effect.” Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky also acknowledged the ceasefire proposal, stating he supports a pause in strikes on energy infrastructure, pending further clarification from Washington.
