Palestinian Activist Mahmoud Khalil Describes Himself as "Political Prisoner"
(MENAFN) Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and recent graduate of Columbia University, condemned his arrest as well as the treatment of detainees in U.S. immigration facilities, declaring himself a "political prisoner."
In a letter released on Tuesday, Khalil expressed his distress about the harsh conditions he faced in detention, writing, "My name is Mahmoud Khalil and I am a Political prisoner. I am writing to you from a detention facility in Louisiana, where I wake to cold mornings and spend long days bearing witness to the quiet injustices underway against a great many people precluded from the protections of the law."
Khalil's arrest occurred on March 8 when agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) detained him and his wife, Noor Abdalla, who was eight months pregnant, after they were returning from a dinner. He was taken into custody without a warrant, and the authorities did not disclose details surrounding his arrest. The arrest was captured on video and shared by his family on Friday.
The Trump administration has accused Khalil of participating in "activities aligned with Hamas," based on his involvement in pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Columbia University the previous year, although no evidence has been provided to support these claims.
