Somali President Survives Assassination Attempt in Mogadishu Bombing
Somali leader flees assassination attempt
Somali President Hassan sheikh Mohamud’s convoy was targeted in a bombing attack while traveling through the capital, Mogadishu, the country’s authorities reported on Tuesday.
According to Somalia’s Information Ministry, the explosion resulted in civilian casualties, though the exact number was not specified. A Reuters journalist at the scene counted four bodies near the presidential palace, while local media reported at least ten fatalities, including seven members of the president’s security detail.
The government blamed the attack on Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group, and confirmed that security forces had launched an investigation. In a post on X, the president’s office announced that Mohamud had safely reached the front-line district of Adan Yabal, where he was overseeing military operations against the extremist group.
The attack occurred just a week after Al-Shabaab gunmen stormed a hotel in Beledweyne, central Somalia, where government officials had gathered to coordinate an offensive against the militants. The death toll from that incident remains unclear, though Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility, asserting that they had killed more than ten people.
Following Tuesday’s bombing, the group released a statement via Reuters, claiming they had deliberately targeted President Mohamud’s convoy as it left the presidential palace en route to the airport.
Al-Shabaab has long waged an insurgency against the Somali government, frequently carrying out bombings and armed assaults on civilians and military targets. Although the group was pushed out of Mogadishu in 2011 by African Union forces, it continues to control territories in southern and central Somalia.
This is not the first assassination attempt against Mohamud. During his first presidential term in 2012, suicide bombers and gunmen attacked the Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu, where he and other dignitaries were meeting. In 2014, Al-Shabaab militants launched a deadly raid on the Somali presidential palace, killing at least a dozen people.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the latest attack and reaffirmed the UN’s support for Somalia’s fight against terrorism.
