MPs in Hungary vote to prohibit LGBTQ parades
(MENAFN) Hungary’s parliament has passed a law that effectively prohibits LGBTQ pride parades across the country. The vote, held on Tuesday, resulted in a 136-27 approval despite chaotic attempts by opposition members to disrupt proceedings with smoke bombs and loud music.
The new legislation expands an existing ban on exposing minors to LGBTQ-related content, now applying it to public gatherings. It also grants law enforcement the power to record participants for identification purposes. Those attending banned events could face fines exceeding $500.
Fast-tracked through parliament just a day after being introduced, the law received backing from the ruling Fidesz party and its coalition partner, the Christian Democrats. Opposition lawmakers staged a last-minute protest by releasing colored smoke and playing Soviet-era songs in an attempt to block the vote.
Following the bill’s passage, thousands of demonstrators marched through central Budapest, eventually blocking traffic on the city’s Margaret Bridge. Authorities reported two arrests, though the protest remained largely peaceful.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been a staunch opponent of LGBTQ advocacy, arguing that it threatens Hungary’s conservative Christian values and serves as a tool of globalist elites to weaken national identity.
Critics, including Budapest Pride organizers, claim the legislation represents a further decline of democratic freedoms under Orban’s rule. Some have even accused the government of imposing authoritarian policies on the country.
