NATO ally rejects US request for eggs
(MENAFN) Finland has declined a request from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to export eggs, citing regulatory challenges and limited domestic supply, Finnish media outlet Yle reported. The US is facing a severe egg shortage due to a bird flu outbreak that has significantly reduced production, driving prices up by 200% to a record $8.41 per dozen.
In an effort to stabilize the market, the USDA reached out to several European countries, including Finland, Sweden, and Denmark. However, Veera Lehtilä, executive director of the Finnish Poultry Association, explained that Finland currently lacks the necessary approvals to export egg products to the US, making shipments difficult. Additionally, Finland’s domestic production is too small to make a meaningful impact on the US shortage.
A formal response, coordinated with the Finnish Food Authority, has already been sent to US officials. Meanwhile, European poultry farms are also struggling with bird flu outbreaks, limiting their ability to export eggs. Sweden’s largest egg producer, Kronägg, and the Danish Egg Association both expressed doubts about meeting US demand.
As the egg crisis unfolds, tensions between the US and the EU continue to rise over trade disputes. President Donald Trump has threatened steep tariffs on European alcohol imports in response to the EU’s proposed duties on American whiskey, further straining transatlantic relations.
