US possibly to acknowledge Crimea as Russian

(MENAFN) The United States is considering recognizing Crimea as part of Russia and may push for the UN to do the same, Semafor reported on Monday, citing sources familiar with the discussions.

According to the report, President Donald trump has not yet made a final decision, but the idea is among several options being explored as his administration seeks to end the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes denied any firm commitments, stating, “We will not negotiate [a peace] deal through the media,” but reaffirmed that Washington’s priority is to “stop the killing and find a peaceful resolution.”

Crimea, predominantly populated by ethnic Russians, voted to secede from Ukraine and join Russia in 2014, following a US-backed coup in Kiev that ousted President Viktor Yanukovich. While Moscow considers Crimea an integral part of its territory, the UN still recognizes it as Ukrainian.

Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to discuss a proposed 30-day ceasefire during a scheduled phone call on Tuesday. Putin has maintained that any peace agreement must address the root causes of the conflict, while also warning that Ukraine could use a temporary truce to rebuild its military following recent battlefield setbacks.

Moscow has insisted that lasting peace can only be achieved if Ukraine abandons its NATO ambitions, declares permanent neutrality, and relinquishes its claims to Crimea and four other regions that voted to join Russia in 2022.

While Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has supported the temporary ceasefire, he has ruled out territorial concessions. Trump, however, has criticized Zelensky, accusing him of obstructing peace efforts and insisting that Ukraine lacks the leverage to dictate terms.
