Tucker Carlson shares his experience working at Russian broadcaster

(MENAFN) In a recent interview with Tucker Carlson, American journalist and former RT host Rick Sanchez shared his experience working at the Russian broadcaster and detailed how pressure from the Biden administration ultimately forced him off the air.

Sanchez, who had been with RT since 2019, said his departure last September was preceded by an unusual phone call from a former colleague in mainstream media. The caller, a former CNN manager, told Sanchez that his RT program had drawn attention from people at his new job—implying it was within the US government, possibly the State Department.

Sanchez recounted that the conversation felt like "a warning or a threat—or maybe both." Just three weeks later, he was forced off the air by US authorities, despite RT already being banned in the country. Though Sanchez wasn’t directly employed by RT, but rather through a contracted production company, the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) intervened to shut down his workplace.

“They basically made it illegal for any American to work for this entity. If you did, you could face jail time or fines,” Sanchez explained. He described the ordeal as especially painful given his Cuban heritage and his lifelong belief in American freedoms.

Reflecting on his time at RT, Sanchez called it "almost nirvana," noting that he had more editorial independence there than at mainstream US outlets. “I wrote my entire show from top to bottom, and nobody saw it until it aired. How’s that?” he said, arguing that RT gave him more journalistic freedom than he had ever experienced elsewhere.
