Trump reveals timing for upcoming phone call with Putin

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has revealed that he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, March 18, to discuss potential steps toward a peace agreement in Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump stated that significant progress had been made over the weekend, and the call would focus on key issues such as territorial matters and power infrastructure. “We will see if we have something to announce maybe by Tuesday. I will be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday. A lot of work’s been done over the weekend. We want to see if we can bring that war to an end,” he said, as reported by journalist Yashar Ali.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff, who recently held talks with Putin in Moscow, previously confirmed that a call between the two leaders was expected this week. He described the ongoing negotiations as “positive,” suggesting that both Russian and Ukrainian sides had moved closer to an agreement. “I expect that there’ll be a call with both presidents this week, and we’re also continuing to engage and have conversations with the Ukrainians,” Witkoff said.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts between Washington and Moscow have been intensifying. On Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a separate phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during which they discussed reestablishing direct communication between their governments.

The first formal call between Trump and Putin in years took place on February 12, 2025. This was followed by high-level talks in Saudi Arabia on February 18, where both nations agreed to assign teams to work on resolving the Ukraine conflict, restore embassy operations, and address other key diplomatic issues. Additional discussions have since been held in Istanbul, focusing on diplomatic funding and a Russian proposal to reinstate direct flights between Moscow and Washington.

After negotiations in Jeddah last week, Ukraine agreed to a 30-day ceasefire. Witkoff subsequently traveled to Moscow on Thursday to present Putin with the terms of the agreement. While the Russian president has expressed support for the ceasefire in principle, he has emphasized the need to address outstanding issues, particularly the status of Ukrainian troops currently encircled in Russia’s Kursk Region.

Although details of Witkoff’s meeting with Putin remain undisclosed, Trump has hinted at progress, stating that the White House had received “some pretty good news” on the ceasefire talks and that recent US-Russia discussions had been “very productive.”
