Vance cautions EU regarding ‘civilizational suicide’
(MENAFN) US Vice President J.D. Vance has cautioned that many European nations are on the path to "civilizational suicide" due to weak border policies and growing restrictions on free speech. His warning, reiterated in an interview with Fox News on Friday, builds on similar remarks he made at the Munich Security Conference last month.
Vance emphasized the deep historical, cultural, and religious ties between the US and Europe, describing the continent as “the cradle of Western civilization.” However, he argued that these foundations are now at serious risk.
“The entire idea of Christian civilization that led to the founding of the United States was shaped in Europe,” he said. “But I think Europe—just as I would have said about America a year ago—is in danger of civilizational suicide.”
Vance criticized European governments for failing to secure their borders and for silencing citizens who protest mass migration policies.
“Too many European countries are unwilling or unable to control their borders,” he said. “And now, we see them restricting free speech—targeting their own citizens—when those citizens try to speak out against the very policies that got Trump and several European leaders elected.”
When asked whether his comments could strain US-EU relations, Vance insisted that open and honest dialogue between allies is essential.
“If a country like Germany allows millions more migrants from cultures that are completely incompatible, then it doesn’t matter what I think—Europe is heading for serious trouble,” he warned.
Vance also pointed out that Europe’s immigration crisis could ultimately affect the US, as some migrants might seek to enter America in the future.
“I want Europe to thrive. I want them to remain an important ally. But for that to happen, they must respect their own people and sovereignty. America cannot do that job for them,” he said.
At the Munich Security Conference in February, Vance accused European leaders of fearing their own citizens and stifling democratic debate under the guise of fighting "disinformation."
“The greatest threat to Europe is not Russia, not China, nor any other external force,” he declared. “The real danger comes from within.”
His remarks received praise from President Donald Trump, who later described Vance’s speech as "brilliant."
