Danish MP claims Trump’s allegations to Greenland possibly to ignite war between NATO nations

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump’s renewed ambition to bring Greenland under American control could lead to a conflict between the US and Denmark, Danish MP and Defense Committee Chairman Rasmus Jarlov has cautioned. He firmly stated that Copenhagen has no intention of ceding the Arctic island.

Jarlov’s comments followed Trump’s meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Thursday, where the US president reaffirmed his belief that Greenland would eventually become part of the United States. trump suggested that NATO could play a role in the process, though Rutte did not endorse the idea. However, Rutte did acknowledge Trump’s concerns about increasing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic.

In a post on X, Jarlov criticized Rutte for engaging in lighthearted discussion over the matter, stating that Denmark does not “appreciate the Secretary General of NATO joking with Trump about Greenland.” He warned that any attempt to take over the island “would mean war between two NATO countries.”

Jarlov further stressed that Greenland’s integration into the US is “completely out of the question” and would only be possible through military invasion. He pointed to the results of Greenland’s recent parliamentary elections, in which the center-right Democrats, a party opposed to Trump’s plans, emerged as the largest political force.

While Greenland enjoys self-rule, Denmark retains control over its foreign affairs, defense, and monetary policy. Trump first proposed purchasing the island in 2019, but the idea was swiftly rejected by Denmark and Greenland’s government. Since his return to office, he has reignited discussions, citing the island’s strategic importance and economic potential.

Despite the Democrats’ election victory, experts warn that the political landscape remains uncertain. Without an outright majority, the party will need to form a coalition. The second-largest party, Naleraq, has signaled openness to deeper US ties, raising the possibility of shifting dynamics in the future.
