NASA reports global sea levels rise ‘unexpectedly’ in 2024

(MENAFN) World sea levels increased 0.23 inches (0.59 centimeters) in 2024, exceeding the estimated 0.17 inches, based on NASA.

A study released on Thursday by NASA discovered that thermal expansion, the process of sea water rising as it gets heated, took a huge part in the “unexpected” increase.

“With 2024 as the warmest year on record, Earth’s expanding oceans are following suit, reaching their highest levels in three decades,” director of physical oceanography programs at NASA, Nadya Vinogradova Shiffer has stated.

In January, NASA reaffirmed that Earth’s regular surface temperature in 2024 was reported as the warmest, with world temperatures the previous year at 1.28C (2.3F) beyond NASA’s 20th-century data.

In past years, two-thirds of sea level increase happened due to water melted from glaciers as well as ice sheets, whereas one-third happened because of thermal expansion. But in 2024 those amounts changed, with two-thirds of the increase caused by thermal expansion, based on the study.
