UN Chief Warns Against Phenomenal Rise Of Hatred Against Islam
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
NEW YORK, March 15 (KUNA) -- In a message marking Saturday's International Day to Combat Islamophobia, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of the phenomenal spread of hatred against Islam and called for adherence to the basic values such as equality and human rights.
In the blessed month of Ramadan, many Muslims live in fear, indiscrimination, isolation and fear from violence, he said during a session of the UN General Assembly, held late on Friday marking the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
The scourge is manifested in veiled fanaticism, policies that violate human rights and dignity, the UN chief said, condemning recurring attacks on sectarian and vulnerable communities. He called for renouncing extremism, urged governments to preserve religious freedoms, renounce fanaticism and hatred of foreigners.
He warned against racial profiling and discriminatory policies that violate human rights and dignity, to outright violence against individuals and places of worship.
"This is part of a wider scourge of intolerance, extremist ideologies, and attacks against religious groups and vulnerable populations," he said, adding that when one group is attacked, the rights and freedoms of all are at risk," he said
He urged everyone around the world to reject and eradicate bigotry, and to speak out against xenophobia and discrimination. He also called on governments to foster social cohesion and protect religious freedom, and for online platforms to curb hate speech and harassment.
"On this International Day to Combat Islamophobia, let us work together to uphold equality, human rights and dignity, and build inclusive societies where everyone, regardless of their faith, can live in peace and harmony."
For his part, the Jordanian Permanent Representative at the UN Ambassador Mahmoud Al-Humoud spoke during the session on behalf of the Arab group, expressing concern at the increasing calls of hatred against Muslims on the social media and stressing that the freedom of expression must not be exploited to promote radicalism and foment discords.
He called for "a legal framework" to combat Islamophobia and set up a "mechanism" to penalize culprits of the hatred crimes. (end)
