KFAED Signs USD 2.1 Mln Deal To Support Displaced People In Yemen

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, March 13 (KUNA) -- Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) signed Thursday a deal with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), offering USD 2.1 million in support of housing rehabilitation and maintenance for the displaced people in Yemen.
The project targets returning internally displaced persons and supporting the self-reliance of returning families by providing them with the necessary materials, equipment and labor costs to rehabilitate their homes damaged by the ongoing conflict in Yemen, KFAED said in a press release.
The number of direct beneficiaries of the project activities is estimated at about 670 families.
Acting Director General of KFAED Waleed Al-Bahar said that the deal reflected Kuwait's commitment to stand by the Yemeni people, who are facing harsh living conditions amid the humanitarian crisis due to war and economic instability.
For her part, UNHCR Representative to Kuwait Nisreen Rubaian explained that Yemen remains one of the world's most complex humanitarian crises, with over four million people displaced due to ongoing conflict and economic instability.
She added that approximately 6.7 million people, 40 percent of whom are internally displaced, lack adequate housing, pointing out that many returnees face difficult living conditions in damaged or destroyed homes, exposing them to protection risks and further displacement.
The grant is the eighth contribution of its kind between the two parties in the field of humanitarian support, as Kuwait Fund has previously provided about USD 24 million to UNHCR since 2016 to finance seven projects.
KFAED Acting Director General Waleed Al-Bahar and UNHCR Representative to Kuwait Nisreen Rubaian signed the grant agreement. (end)
