Senior MP suggests Russia must fire Oreshnik attack in response to Ukrainian drone assault
(MENAFN) Moscow should deploy its new Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile system in retaliation for Ukraine’s large-scale drone assault on Russian civilian areas, a senior lawmaker has suggested.
Overnight, Russian air defenses intercepted 337 Ukrainian drones—the largest drone raid since the conflict escalated in February 2022—according to the Defense Ministry. The attack resulted in three civilian deaths and over a dozen injuries in Moscow Region, Governor Andrey Vorobyev reported.
When asked whether Russia should retaliate using the Oreshnik missile, State Duma Defense Committee Chairman Andrey Kartapolov responded that the decision rests with President Vladimir Putin but stated, “I think it would be appropriate, and it would be even better if more than one missile were launched.”
The Oreshnik missile, which was secretly developed, was first used in November 2024 to strike Ukraine’s Yuzhmash military-industrial facility in Dnepr. According to President Putin, the missile’s multiple warheads travel at ten times the speed of sound, making them impossible to intercept. Following its successful deployment, Russia began mass-producing the weapon.
Kartapolov dismissed the Ukrainian drone assault as a propaganda stunt with no military objective, aimed at impressing Western allies—particularly the United States. He speculated that the attack could be linked to US-Ukraine negotiations in Saudi Arabia or the visit of OSCE Secretary General Feridun Sinirlioglu to Moscow, which Russia has accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting.
