Syrian president establishes, leads National Security Council


(MENAFN) On Wednesday, Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of Syria, released an order to set up the National Security Council, a body tasked with overseeing and managing protection and political strategies of Syria.

A statement from the Syrian presidency confirmed that Al-Sharaa will lead the council, which will comprise the ministers of foreign affairs, defense, as well as interior, including the general intelligence head. Additionally, specialized and expert roles will be filled by presidential appointees chosen for their proficiency and skill.

The decree states: "Based on the powers granted to the President of the Syrian Arab Republic, and based on the supreme national interest, and keen to enhance national security and respond to security and political challenges in the coming period, the President of the Republic decides the establishment of the National Security Council under the chairmanship of the President.”

The council, as outlined in the decree, "shall meet periodically or at the invitation of the President of the Republic."
