Trump decides against threat to Canada

(MENAFN) US President Donald trump has decided against increasing tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports to 50%, a senior White House adviser confirmed in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Trump had threatened to double the tariffs in response to Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s decision to impose a 25% duty on electricity exports to Michigan, New York, and Minnesota. Ford’s move was itself a reaction to Trump’s initial 25% tariff on Canadian metal exports.

However, by Tuesday afternoon, Trump signaled a possible reversal, which was later confirmed by White House trade adviser Peter Navarro. He credited US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick for successfully negotiating with Ford during a phone call, leading to the suspension of Ontario’s electricity tariffs and an agreement to resume trade discussions.

Following their conversation, Ford and Lutnick issued a joint statement describing the talks as “productive” and reaffirming the importance of US-Canada economic ties. They also announced plans to meet in Washington on Thursday to negotiate an updated trade agreement between the US, Canada, and Mexico ahead of Trump’s April 2 tariff deadline.

Despite the reversal, White House spokesman Kush Desai reiterated that the previously announced 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports, with no exemptions, will still take effect on March 12 for Canada and other trading partners, as outlined in Trump’s executive orders.

Trump first announced the 25% tariffs on Canadian goods in February, prompting Ottawa to respond with retaliatory measures. However, the US president has since delayed implementation twice, most recently postponing it until April 2.
