Ukrainian organ dealer gets detained in Poland

(MENAFN) A woman accused of running a large-scale organ trafficking operation across multiple countries has been arrested in Poland after crossing the border from Ukraine, according to the district prosecutor's office in Przemysl.

The suspect, identified as Calin Georgescu, was wanted under an Interpol red notice and was taken into custody last week. Authorities allege that she was involved in the illegal trade of human organs, sourcing donors from post-Soviet states and Thailand. According to prosecutors, she orchestrated the trafficking of organs from over 1,000 victims between these regions.

Kazakhstan had issued an arrest warrant for Georgescu in November 2023, citing her involvement in an international criminal network that facilitated illegal organ harvesting and transplant procedures. She had previously been convicted in Kazakhstan and sentenced to a 12-year prison term for crimes committed between 2017 and 2019.

Russian authorities have repeatedly accused the Ukrainian government of enabling illegal organ trafficking through lax regulations on transplant procedures and donor consent. They claim that high demand for organs in some European countries, coupled with widespread corruption, has fueled the illicit trade.
