Corinthians Claims 2-0 Victory But Falls Short In Libertadores Cup

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) Corinthians defeated Barcelona of Ecuador 2-0 on Wednesday at Neo Química Arena, but the result proved insufficient to prevent their early elimination from the Libertadores Cup.

Goals from Félix Torres and André Carrillo failed to overcome the 3-0 deficit from the first leg in Ecuador. The team now suffers its third elimination in the preliminary stage of this prestigious tournament.

The Ecuadorian side advances to the group stage and awaits Monday's draw to learn their opponents. Corinthians must now shift focus to the South American Cup while licking their wounds from this disappointing exit.

Ramón Díaz's squad faces another crucial challenge this Sunday. They travel to Allianz Parque to face Palmeiras in the first leg of the São Paulo State Championship final, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 PM local time.

Urged on by passionate fans, Corinthians launched an offensive campaign from the opening minute. The first dangerous shot came at the 22-minute mark when Carrillo received a pass from Garro and fired a powerful first-time shot.

Goalkeeper Contreras made an impressive save to deny the attempt. Yuri Alberto nearly scored with a header two minutes later, but Contreras thwarted his effort.
The Home Team's Victory and Barcelona's Progression
The home team broke through in the 39th minute when Félix Torres headed in Garro's precise corner kick, giving Corinthians the lead before halftime.

The second half saw an increasingly desperate Corinthians push forward. Barcelona almost capitalized on a Torres error in the 9th minute, but goalkeeper Hugo Souza made a crucial save from Oyola's shot.

Corinthians continued to press against Barcelona's defensive wall. Carrillo scored the second goal in the 39th minute, tapping in after Gustavo Henrique deflected Garro's cross. The goal stood after a VAR review that initially ruled it offside.

Díaz added more attackers in the final minutes as Corinthians hunted for a third goal. The team fought until the final whistle but failed to find the crucial third goal that would have forced a penalty shootout.

The 2-0 victory ultimately proved futile as Barcelona's three-goal advantage from the first leg secured their progression to the next round of the Libertadores Cup.
