US senator issues warning to ‘sanction the hell out of’ Russia
(MENAFN) US Senator Lindsey Graham has warned that he will push for harsher sanctions on Russia if Moscow does not engage in ceasefire negotiations over the Ukraine conflict soon.
Since the escalation of hostilities in 2022, Washington has imposed extensive sanctions on Russia, targeting its financial sector, trade, and energy exports. However, President Donald trump has suggested that these restrictions could be used as leverage, potentially lifting some to facilitate peace talks.
Speaking with Fox News on Sunday, Graham—a Republican from South Carolina known for his hawkish stance—called for even tougher measures against Moscow.
“If they don’t engage in ceasefire and peace talks with the administration, we should sanction the hell out of them, and I’ll have legislation to do that next week,” he said.
Graham has long been a vocal supporter of military and financial aid to Ukraine, previously calling the conflict a US-led proxy war against Russia. He also described the killing of Russian troops by Ukrainian forces as “the best money” Washington has ever spent.
The senator criticized the recent pause in US intelligence sharing and weapons transfers to Ukraine, warning that withdrawing support could have severe consequences. “If we pull the plug on Ukraine, it’d be worse than Afghanistan,” he argued.
Graham also took aim at Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, saying he mishandled his recent White House meeting with Trump. Zelensky was reportedly asked to leave after clashing with Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, with Trump telling him to return only when ready for serious negotiations. Following the meeting, the US suspended military aid and intelligence sharing with Kiev.
Last week, Trump also warned Moscow of potential large-scale sanctions unless a ceasefire is reached. However, Reuters later reported that Washington is also considering easing some restrictions on Russia’s energy sector as part of a broader peace effort.
Russia has repeatedly stated that Western sanctions have failed to cause lasting economic damage, calling them illegal and ineffective. President Vladimir Putin has reiterated Moscow’s willingness to negotiate but insists that any settlement must ensure Russia’s long-term security.
“We don’t seek what belongs to others, but we won’t give up what’s ours,” Putin recently stated.
