Polish Premier suggests that country should have its own nukes

(MENAFN) Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has suggested that Poland should seek access to nuclear weapons, possibly through participation in France’s proposed nuclear umbrella initiative. Speaking to parliament on Friday, Tusk emphasized the need for advanced military capabilities to enhance national security.

His remarks follow French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent proposal to extend France’s nuclear deterrent to other EU nations, citing a perceived threat from Russia. Tusk confirmed that Warsaw is already engaged in “serious discussions” with Paris on the matter.

The Polish leader also called for withdrawing from international treaties banning anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions, arguing that Poland should prioritize its defense needs over external criticism.

Earlier this week, Tusk urged the EU to boost military spending, claiming that Russia could be defeated in an arms race just as the Soviet Union was decades ago. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has echoed similar calls for increased defense investments.

Moscow has strongly criticized Tusk’s comments, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denouncing the “confrontational and militaristic” rhetoric from Poland and France. Russia has repeatedly denied posing a military threat to Europe, with President Vladimir Putin dismissing such claims as baseless attempts to justify higher military budgets.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump has urged European NATO members to take more responsibility for their defense but has also spoken against an arms race, calling for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
