US judge accuses China for COVID-19 outbreak

(MENAFN) According to local outlet, a ruling by a US federal judge has determined that the Chinese government bears responsibility for its handling of the initial phase of the COVID-19 outbreak, with accusations of suppressing information regarding the virus' transmission and stockpiling essential protective equipment.

A news agency reports revealed on Friday that US Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr., presiding in the state of Missouri, ordered China to pay a $24 billion penalty. Authorities have pledged to implement the ruling through measures such as confiscating Chinese-owned assets within the state, including land.

Originally filed in April 2020 by Missouri’s attorney general’s office, the legal case alleged that China deliberately concealed key details about the virus and its mode of transmission while concurrently restricting the universal availability of personal protective equipment (PPE).

According to the report, the case, brought forward in the initial months of the pandemic, argued that China’s actions directly hindered the speed and effectiveness of the US response, leading to critical delays in addressing the outbreak.

In issuing the verdict, Limbaugh highlighted evidence suggesting that China possessed knowledge of the virus' transmission far earlier than it disclosed to the world.
